Introduction

This page aims to give you a rough idea of the process for organising and holding an audition. If you're an established director, then there is probably nothing of interest to you here. Indeed you may well have your own, totally contradictory way of organising your auditions and that's fine; whatever works for you.

Things to do first

There are some things that you need to do as soon as you know that you are going to run an audition. Some might seem obvious, others, less so.

Things to take to the audition

The following is a list of things which you might consider taking to an audition. Many of them will depend upon the size of the production and the expected numbers.

  • Milk and biscuits (no, seriously)!
  • Signage giving clear directions to the audition room (remember some people might never have been to that venue before)
  • A camera
  • A form for each person auditioning to complete, giving such information as:
    • Name
    • Phone number
    • Email address
    • Space to attach either a digital photo number - or preferably, a Polaroid
    • Which part or parts they would like to be considered for
  • One or more copies of the full script
  • Stationery for writing notes about each audition piece and the people who have read - don't rely on your memory (it's best to design a form beforehand)
