Introduction
Before the sounds that are picked up by microphones together with those produced by instruments can be sent out to the various speakers, they first of all need to be sent to the mixing desk in the control room. There, they are balanced against each other, cleaned up and their tone adjusted.
At the stage, each microphone or instrument will be assigned a channel number (sometimes two). These channel are then assigned a desk channel number in the control room by means of the patch panel.
Overview
The basic process of getting a microphone heard is as follows:
- Connect microphone to XLR cable
- Connect this XLR cable to either the stage-side tie-line panel, or to the front of stage tie junction box.
- Make a note of the number used.
- Connect that number on the left-hand side of the patch panel, to a desk channel number on the right-hand side.
- On the desk, find that desk channel number and adjust Gain, Phantom Power if necessary and Output until a positive level is indicated on the channel LED meter.
- Ensure the amplifier for the desired destination is on and adjusted to the correct level.
- Fade up the master faders (red) to the '0' line.
- Ensure that the small output selector switches are set to the correct output.
- Finally fade up the desk channel number until the desired level is reached.
